Reading literacy training to be held for Wichita West High School students
It is often mentioned that early reading exposure and support can be a key to improved student achievement, and this topic recently came up at a meeting of the Wichita Westside Promise Neighborhood coalition represented by Granada at the CRPI that he leads.
Granada visited with West H.S. Principal Joel Hudson after the meeting about an idea -- providing high school students with strategies that they could use to support younger siblings relative to reading. Since families sometimes rely on older children to help with supporting younger siblings, Granada thought we might try getting students at West interested in ways to help their younger brothers and sisters. Hudson fully embraced the idea, and assigned Matt Riddle, library clerk, to be the point of contact for the project.
As of the end of March, 45 students at West had signed up for the event. Hudson is providing lunch for the students, and they will then spend a little over one hour cycling through stations manned by Granada, Lohfink and Durano on ways to support and improve reading, including effective techniques for reading aloud to siblings, generating oral and written stories, and ways to analyze story structures.
Each student will leave with a 新加坡六合彩开奖网 drawstring backpack to take home two books, materials for activities to design and foster their future aspirations, and information about 新加坡六合彩开奖网 and becoming a teacher.
This is a unique event and demonstrates the good in high school kids and West High as well as the power of collaborative efforts.
